Benefits of Mangosteen and What It Can Treat

Mangosteen is a small purple fruit that grows in Southeast part of Asia. It is a tropical fruit with a slightly sweet and sour flavor. It is a good source of nutrients. The fruit is also a great source of fiber and has been shown to provide some other health benefits, such as improved gut health and lower blood sugar. It is sometimes referred to as purple mangosteen because of the deep purple color its rind develops when ripe.

Fight Cancer

Population studies show that diets rich in vegetables and fruits like mangosteen are associated with reduced the incidences of cancer. Many test-tube studies have shown that xanthones inhibit the growth of the cancer cells in the lung, stomach and breast tissue. Future human research will determine if the fruit can be used as a cancer-fighting agent.

Rich Antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that can prevent or slow the cell damage by neutralizing free radicals in the body. Free radicals are molecules with an uneven number of electrons and it can damage cells, causing inflammation. One study from 2015 asked 30 people to drink a mangosteen-based beverage in every day for 30 days. After 30 days, the mangosteen group had 15% more antioxidants in their bloodstream.

Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is a normal part of the immune system of body. Test-tube and animal studies suggest that xanthones have an anti-inflammatory effect and may reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Blood Sugar Level

A 26-week study showed that obese women taking 400 milligrams of the mangosteen supplement had reduced insulin resistance than the control group that did not take the supplemental mangosteen. It should be noted that mangosteen extract has a more concentrated dose of antioxidants, and it would be necessary for eating a large quantity of the fruit to see similar results.
