Unique way to grow blood lily

While traditional methods of growing blood lily in pots or directly in the ground are effective, here’s a unique approach that focuses on creating a more naturalistic and visually interesting display

Growing Blood Lilies

This method takes inspiration from the epiphytic nature of some related plants and showcases the blood lily’s foliage in an elevated and structured way. Here’s how you can try it:

  1. Choose the Right Blood Lily: Select a blood lily species with attractive foliage, such as Scadoxus multiflorus with its large, wavy-edged leaves, or Haemanthus albiflos with its broad, sometimes hairy leaves.
  2. Prepare the Support Structure: Obtain or create a moss pole. You can make one by wrapping sphagnum moss tightly around a sturdy stake or PVC pipe and securing it with fishing line or wire. Use a small, decorative trellis suitable for a pot. Bamboo or wire trellises work well.
  3. Potting Mix: Prepare a well-draining and airy potting mix. A mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of good quality potting soil would be suitable to mimic a more epiphytic environment while still providing some nutrient retention.
  4. Planting:
    • Choose a pot that is appropriately sized for the bulb and the support structure.
    • Place the moss pole or trellis securely in the center of the pot.
    • Plant the blood lily bulb at the base of the support structure, ensuring the neck of the bulb is just above the soil line.
    • Carefully arrange the roots around the base.
    • Fill the pot with your prepared potting mix, ensuring the bulb is firmly planted.
Care

Water thoroughly after planting. Allow the top inch or two of the soil to dry out between waterings. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to bulb rot. Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Blood lilies appreciate moderate to high humidity. Misting the foliage can be beneficial.
