How to grow Crown of Thorns tree
The Crown of Thorns is a resilient succulent that can be grown both indoors and outdoors in warm climates.
Cuttings Propagation
This is the most recommended method as seeds have a short viability period and slow germination. In spring or summer, using clean gloves to protect from the milky sap, cut a 3-4 inches piece from the tip of a healthy stem with leaves.
Remove most leaves, leaving a few at the top. Allow the cut ends to dry and callus over in a cool, dry place for a few days until they turn grayish and pucker. This prevents rot. You can dip the cut end in warm water to stop the sap flow.
Prepare a well-draining soil mix. Plant the callused end firmly in a 4-6 inches pot. Water moderately at first. You can use rooting hormone to encourage faster root development.
Seeds Propagation
Crown of Thorns can produce seeds if pollinated, but germination is unreliable. Sow fresh seeds immediately on the surface of a moist, well-draining medium and cover lightly with sand. Keep lightly moist in bright light and a warm environment.
Temperature and Humidity
Maintain warm temperatures between 18-24°C. They can tolerate higher and lower extremes but are sensitive to sudden changes and frost. Average indoor humidity is suitable. Ensure good air circulation.
Caring
Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out completely between waterings. Crown of Thorns is drought-tolerant and susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Water thoroughly when needed, allowing excess water to drain away. Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant is semi-dormant.
Prune to control size and shape, and to encourage more blooms. Remove any dead, damaged, or yellowing leaves. Prune stems back to their origin point to encourage new growth. Wear gloves when pruning due to the thorns and sap. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage more blooms.
